We knew DMA filmmaking student Sam Hurwitz enjoyed his summer at filmmaking camp. He said so on an end-of-camp survey, awarding DMA a perfect score for overall camp experience.

And here’s more proof: He’s already signed up for two more courses for next summer!

DMA is “aces” with filmmaking student Sam Hurwitz, shown presenting the movie he made at camp.

Sam’s a 12-year-old from New York State, who attended DMA’s Concordia College tech camps in early July. Here’s what he had to say when we spoke with him:

What did you actually create at DMA tech camp?
I attended the two-week filmmaking academy. I created my own short movie in week one and collaborated on a group short (“Aces”) in the second week. We did everything from brainstorming ideas, writing the script, directing the films, acting in them and then editing them.

How exactly did it make you feel when you completed your final project?
Very good. I was so excited that I learned a lot and made a professional movie.

What were the most fun things about attending DMA tech camp?
The most fun thing about DMA was the camaraderie with the people when making the movies. We all loved movies and had A LOT of fun making them together and talking. It was also incredibly fun to actually make the movie.

Sounds like you really got into filmmaking…
We learned about scriptwriting in Celtx. Also, all about the camera and setting up the shots. And we learned Final Cut Pro editing software. I also loved learning about filmmaking itself. We learned many technical terms used in filmmaking and spent some time analyzing trailers and short films.

Did you make friends at DMA camp this summer?
I became friends with the other people in my filmmaking group and I was friendly with some of the other kids from other groups from break and lunch.

Would you like to come back to a DMA tech camp next summer?
I’m already signed up! I will be taking one week of filmmaking and another week of visual effects.

I was so excited that I learned a lot and made a professional movie.

Are you using what you learned at DMA now that you’re back at your regular school?
I don’t think I will use what I learned in actual school. However, acting with other actors and cooperating with the directors teaches you cooperation and communication which is very helpful for school.

Would you suggest DMA tech camps to your best friends and their parents?
I would suggest DMA to my best friends and their parents. I think many of my friends would like some of the courses available at DMA.

So were your parents pleased with your DMA experience?
My parents were very pleased with my DMA experience and that I had fun and learned a lot.
