Create and Print Your Own Custom 3D Models

Creating has undergone an incredible evolution in the last decade as 3D printing capabilities continue to rapidly evolve. Whether fixing your favorite toy’s broken part or building your 3D printed city this course will empower students with the fundamental understanding and experience with the software and hardware that are responsible for custom 3D printing.

Students will spend the week using a CAD (computer-aided design) software program called Tinkercad and learning how to break down real-world objects into 3D shapes. They’ll also learn about the 3D printing process, taking the objects from Tinkercad and setting them up for printing in an application called Cura, and then printing them on the Ultimaker 2+ printers. Each student will leave camp with four custom-designed 3D-printed objects.

About 3D Modeling Courses

Our project-based curriculum infused with design thinking methodology teaches students how to be creative within constraints. This introduction to the world of 3D design and printing gives students a chance to go through the engineering and design process, learn the importance of prototyping and revisions, and go home with proof of their hard work and creativity. Explore more design and animation courses.

The Adventures Experience: Our Adventures camps give elementary level students, ages 9-12, a meaningful, hands-on introduction to the fundamentals of technology and design-thinking methodology; challenging them to collaborate with their fellow campers to create solutions to real-world problems.

I do not have any 3D design, modeling or printing experience. Will I be able to keep up with the course?

Perfect. This course teaches foundational concepts for design and modeling with easy-to-use but feature-rich software, tailored to work with the 3D-printing process. Instructors and TAs are available to make sure that all students can keep up with the curriculum – no matter their skill or experience level.

Do students need to bring a laptop and/or a 3D printer?

No. DMA provides the 3D printer, 3D printing materials, and computers.
