University of Houston Campus Facts
Founded in 1927 as a Junior College, University of Houston eventually became a four-year institution in 1933 when the Governor of Texas recognized the need for another outstanding university. The 667-acre campus has tech written all over it and dedicates itself to scientific research. Among its specializations are nanotechnology, commercial space exploration, superconductivity, biomedical engineering, and AI. As a result, a number of students have come out of UH to go on and influence the world. The creator of WordPress (on which this very site is built), Matt Mullenweg, attended UH as well as a number of filmmakers like Julian Schnabel (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) and actors such as Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory) & Brent Spiner (Star Trek: The Next Generation).
UH loves its history and routinely celebrates it. Each spring, UH students hold the “Frontier Fiesta” which recreates an Old West frontier town that exhibits historical settings and relics. Students who go here get a taste of the college life of an outstanding research institution and can walk the same halls that have served as home to innovators and creators.
